In comparsion to the training given to different military units it is evident that the Marines are far and above training with our other services. Know one who never had to live through something like this would ever believe what was included in this book. The stories that were told by this book are well written and very close to the actual events that took place during this time period. it just seems impossivle for anyone to have gone through it and live to tell the story. Its a tribute to the Marine Corp who train men to with stand the elements of combat. The average American never really knowes what is going on during these phases of our country's history. With this book it actually brings out what took place and describes it in a very realistic manner as to the happening at this Chosin Reservoir Campaign.
Breakout is an amazingly detailed, absorbing and fascinating account of the Chosin Reservoir campaign. Anyone interested in military history, especially the Korean War, will not be able to put this book down once started. The first hand accounts by memebers of the ist Marine Division (1st, 5th, 7th and 11th Regiments) are vividly realistic and descriptive. Semper Fi.
you will have a new respect for what many many went through in this forgotten war; both civilian and military, American and non-American. an enemy grenade going off next to your head, b). you will be cold, tired, hungry, sad, dirty, and amazed when you're finished reading this book. OK, so you think you have it tough. getting wounded by one of the above, falling back into your foxhole, and praying that someone could help you before you freeze to death. many of your friends would be killed before your eyes, and the odds were that you yourself would be killed or wounded in one or many of the following ways: a).
at night, like clockwork at 2am, the enemy bugles and horns would sound off and as many as 500 to 1,000 enemy would rush the lines in waves, forcing you to defend yourself with frozen equipment that would jam up.

if you don't already have an enormous amount of respect for the armed services of the USA, you surely will after reading this astounding piece of history.
As to the Army, they really couldn't have been expected to perform as well on average, given that many units had large proportions of recent conscripts, American and Korean. However, he tells the truth about the only-human Marines: some did give up, some did flee, some units did collapse.
To reduce it all to one line, the massively outnumbered U.S. "Gripping" is the only word I can find for this tale of the Chosin Resovoir campaign.
He tells about the big picture while keeping the story on a human scale: men building barricades of bodies, men on both sides scrounging anything they could find from their own dead or the enemy's, wounded and frostbitten men who fought until they were killed or sometimes frozen to death at their posts.It's been said Russ lionizes the Marines and disparages the Army too much. Marines fought their way out of a Chinese trap that looked like a disaster.
Russ puts us right in the midst of the freezing foxholes, bewildering terrain, terrible roads, and worse weather, all of which sometimes made it hard to tell friend from foe. In the end, though, Russ convincingly argues the Marines' esprit de corps kept most of them together when almost any other force would have disintegrated.
It's a cliche to say you can't put a book down, but I couldn't lay this one aside.
